Follow the Guide #0: Discovering KSP

Follow The Guide

Before we go any further… Make sure you’ve read the previous tutorials! And there are… None!

This isn’t the first, or even “zeroth” tutorial for nothing test 😛 Here, we’ll introduce the game and provide a hands-on experience for those who may not be familiar. Admit it, at this stage, it would be a shame to already have some prerequisites X) But for the next steps, expect to see a few, telling you which tutorials it’s good to master before diving into this one 🙂

Introduction

Let’s discover together what makes Kerbal Space Program so rich and proceed with a proper presentation of this fantastic game! Yep, this intro is short, but don’t get too used to it, the upcoming documents will be much more substantial 😀

Summary

In this first document that isn’t quite a tutorial, we’ll delve into the key aspects of KSP: menus, game mode selection, buildings, and flight interfaces are on the agenda. A bit of reading to better grasp the extensive possibilities of this game and undoubtedly pique your interest 😉

Reading recommendations

  1. Take the time to go through the entire guide once, with a calm mind, without the game. If you find a section challenging, it’s likely to be detailed and explained later 😉
  2. Use the provided download files.
  3. Do not hesitate to revisit a tutorial that you thought you had mastered; you might find important information!
  4. Feel free to ask any questions in the comments, making sure to be specific enough 🙂
  5. Save frequently while executing a tutorial in-game. Use the Alt + F5 and Alt + F9 tools to name and easily find your saves. The tutorials often suggest important save points, but there’s nothing stopping you from creating more!
  6. Try the exercises at the end of the tutorial: by downloading a save, you can try out various specific scenarios, allowing you to improve and/or identify your difficulties. This makes it easier to ask questions about specific points that are causing issues, without having to specify the rocket you used, the location, or the circumstances 😉
  7. On the last page, discover some mods directly related to the elements presented in this tutorial, but be careful: they sometimes introduce changes to gameplay!
Structure of the document

The text contains several spoilers: they significantly shorten the length of tutorials while preserving many details for those who would like to read them. However, don’t hesitate to open them to discover their content, as they can be rich in explanations and concrete examples!

The embedded gifs are precisely timed: the selected passages correspond to your reading. You can also watch the entire video at any time to get a sense of the sequence of steps.

Some links allow you to download files. This is highly recommended (unless otherwise noted) as it ensures that we all start with a common base and avoids any design errors from the outset: most of the time, you’re learning a maneuver, a technique, so let’s avoid basic electrical power oversights! It also eliminates exotic considerations related to eccentric designs: use the bricks provided, learn with them, and you’ll be able to adapt the explanations to your needs and creations later on 😉

Vocabulary

  1. VAB : « Vehicle Assembly Building »
  2. SPH : « Space Plane Hangar »
  3. Parts: Building elements such as tanks, thrusters, batteries, lights…
  4. Craft: It’s a construction, like a rocket, a satellite, an aircraft, a rover.
Materials for Download Purposes

In some of our tutorials, you will find a comprehensive archive of KSP documents, typically containing a save file that includes crafts and scenarios for you to practice and test your skills. Check out the exercises at the end of each chapter 🙂 As a reminder, this archive needs to be extracted, and all you have to do is copy and paste the folder “KSC – TutorialName” alongside your other save files. It is advisable to dedicate a clean, mod-free installation for the best experience with our tutorials, allowing you to neatly accumulate your saves! For more information on handling save folders and creating a fresh KSP installation, we direct you to these two links; it’s very simple and quick 😉 And of course, for managing the Craft files that will undoubtedly be offered for download, this is where it happens.
